Made You Look. Diamond Contact Lenses

Can you believe your eyes? The piercing peepers you see before you are glowing. But this is more than the typical 'twinkle in the eye', or some run of the mill Halloween contacts. These are, to my knowledge, the first line of contact lenses made with actual gold and diamonds. Right.
Indian specialist, Dr. Chandrashekhar Chawan of Shekhar Eye Research Pvt Ltd., is pushing the boundaries of ocular opulence with La SER Eye Jewelry.
I'll admit, at first glance, they are a bit shocking. I'm envisioning an imaginary scene from the movie Twilight with an Edward vs Jacob staring contest, but I digress...
Take a closer LOOK inside.

Each lens is made with 18 karat yellow or white gold plate with 18 diamonds a each, a total of 500 milligrams in weight. The diamond ringlets are then glued to what is called a Chandra Bostonä device that prevents them from touching the cornea, with a large diameter sclera lens to hold water in front of the cornea.
The lenses must be sterilized for upwards of five hours in hydrogen peroxide, but can be worn comfortably for hours at a time thereafter, although it is advised to remove them while sleeping.
Only 3996 La SER lenses will be made, but the company plans to sells them outside of India. They also come in varieties with only yellow or white gold.

The company says that these lenses are "soothing" to wear, however it can't be ignored that diamonds are hard enough to cut through glass and having them so close to my 20/20's concerns me. An additional note: they have yet to be approved by the FDA.

So are these glittering contacts eye-catching or an eyesore?
Your thoughts? ~vK
